South Korea legislates an SMR push, first unit by 2035

South Korea (National Assembly / MSIT)

South Korea's National Assembly passed an SMR Special Act (Feb 2026) creating a five-year plan and a promotion committee, with MSIT to invest ~KRW 1.2tn ($830M) by 2030 in three home-grown SMR designs. Its 11th electricity plan also confirmed two new large reactors (2.8 GWe) plus 700 MW of SMR capacity, targeting the country's first commercial SMR around 2035 — a national framework to ride the AI-driven power-demand surge.
