Holtec submitted Part 1 of its NRC construction-permit application for two SMR-300 units (Pioneer 1 & 2, ~340 MWe each) at Palisades, Michigan — the first major SMR-300 licensing step, seeking early limited work authorization.
The NRC approved the license termination plan for Oyster Creek on 30 Jul 2026 — the last regulatory step in decommissioning what was the oldest operating US nuclear plant when it shut in 2018. Holtec, which owns the site, plans four SMR-300 units there for a combined 1,360 MWe, paired with solar and storage, targeting commercial operation in 2036. The reactors themselves are not licensed: no construction permit application has been filed for the site, so the plan is still an intention on a now-cleared site.
